Pahrump Roundabouts

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will break ground on a pair of roundabouts along a one-mile-long stretch State Route 372 at the intersections of Blagg Road and Pahrump Valley Boulevard in Pahrump on October 3, 2016. Las Vegas Paving is the general contractor.

The $4.05 million project will create sections of new curb, gutters and sidewalks as well as new handicap accessible pedestrian crossings in each direction. There will be new street lighting, signage, and stretches of asphalt and concrete paving with a friction finishing course on nine valley gutters where certain streets intersect with S.R. 372 that will help vehicle tires hug the road in order to prevent skidding.

The concrete roundabouts will feature elaborate desert median landscaping with tri-colored crushed rock arranged in a graphic pattern; there will additionally be concrete walls, boulders, Joshua trees, agave cactuses, and shrubs. Cor-Ten steel art sculptures of wild horses, big horn sheep and birds will grace the roundabout medians. The 6-month-long project features a sophisticated traffic plan with flaggers, occasional night-time work and phased construction while maintaining continual access for emergency first responders. Work is anticipated to finish by late April 2017.

Traffic restrictions are as follows: 

  • Tractor-trailers and over dimensional trucks will be detoured along S.R. 160 to West Basin Avenue to South Lola Lane onto S.R. 372 starting October 3 and continuing through April 14, 2017.
  • Pahrump Valley Boulevard will be closed 300 feet north from S. R. 372 starting October 10 and continuing through January 1, 2017.
  • Blagg Road will be closed 500 feet north from S.R. 372 starting October 21 and continuing through January 1, 2017.

Roundabouts are one-way circular intersections with a center island where traffic flows freely without stop signs or traffic lights. They’re safer and more efficient than traditional four-way signalized intersections. A roundabout has only eight points of potential conflict for vehicle collisions, whereas four-way signalized intersections have thirty-two. Vehicles are required to enter and exit roundabouts using rights turns at reduced speeds. Lower travel speeds allows for smaller gaps between circulating vehicles for increased traffic volume and fewer delays as well as better fuel consumption and improved air pollution. Roundabouts can reduce injury related crashes and they’re cost effective, too, saving thousands annually due to no electrical fees and reduced maintenance expenses.
